THE CONCERN OVER JOE BIDEN’S BRAIN

Up until his dominating victory in South Carolina’s Democratic Presidential Primary, former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign seemed to be all but capsized. Embarrassing defeats in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada slowed the roll of the election’s front-runner, primarily brought on by less than stellar debate performances. Although he showed some strong points in each debate, many grew concerned by Biden’s only semi-coherent ramblings that peppered his speeches. Now, after a moderate-wing unification and the ensuing drop-outs by Mike Bloomberg and Bernie Sanders, Biden is now the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. The stage is all but set for a Biden and Trump showdown in November, shocking onlookers who assumed the Biden campaign was dead just over one month ago. Even though Vice President Biden has shown impressive resolve in his comeback, the concern over his cognition still remains. Regardless of who sits in the Oval Office in January of next year, they will be the oldest president to take office in American history. Donald Trump is 73, soon to be 74, and Joe Biden …

Coronavirus In America — A Brief Timeline and Where We Are Now

Across the country, the streets are quiet and the hospitals frenzied. Schools have shut down and everyone deemed non-essential are working from home. Or not working at all. Only the medical personnel, grocery workers, and a collection of others continue in public. It took some time for the United States to incur its initial case of Coronavirus, with its first infected citizen testing positive on January 21st, 2020. It wasn’t until a month after that did the United States see its first death. As the case numbers surged in China, France, Italy, and Iran, America still maintained a relatively low count of confirmed cases. By the end of February, President Donald Trump had been addressing the crisis, affirming the situation was restrained. “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”, the president said on Twitter, February 24th. During the time of Trump’s tweet, there …

New York State Decriminalizes Marijuana

DW-New York. While in session last month, the New York Senate passed legislation to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. “Communities of color have borne the brunt of New York State’s marijuana drug laws. Our justice system directly reflects who we are as a society and that is why the Senate Majority is taking action to fix this broken system,” Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said. According to a New York Senate press release, black citizens are eight times more likely to be arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession than their non-black and latino counterparts. Latinos are five times more likely. The new law would make marijuana possession punishable by fine, rather than criminal charges that could lead to imprisonment. The legislation would also expunge certain former violations for individuals. However, any possession of amounts greater than two ounces would not be protected by this law. Prior to this decriminalization, marijuana charges could bar an individual’s ability to attain certain jobs and housing. So far, 10 states have fully legalized the drug and 16 others have decriminalized it.

Iran Nuclear Deal On Its Last Legs

Iran Nuclear Deal On Its Last Legs

DW-USA.After Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Iran Nuclear Deal last May, the agreement meant to curtail Tehran’s ambitions started to break down. Today, the deal appeared to crumble further after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani removed all limits on nuclear research and development. “The atomic energy organization (of Iran) is ordered to immediately start whatever is needed in the field of research and development, and abandon all the commitments that were in place regarding research and development,” said Mr. Rouhani. Since the US’s exit, the major European powers have been trying to salvage the situation, specifically French President Emmanuel Macron. When discussing the possibility of Iran staying in the deal, Mr Macron had this to say, “We need to convince the Iranians to go in that direction, and we can do that if we give them economic compensation of some form. If we make some movement in terms of lines of credit or reopening certain economic sectors.” The French did supposedly offer a $15 billion bailout to the Iranians to help recuperate …

Mexican-American Border

Donald Trump and the Mexican-American Border

DW-USA.The Trump Administration has made one more controversial attempt to meet a pinnacle campaign promise. $3.6 billion, originally allocated to military-related construction projects, will now be used to build more of the boundary wall stretching the Mexican-American Border. Half of the $3.6 billion was originally diverted to bases abroad, the other half spanning 23 states and 3 US territories. Puerto Rico is one of the territories severely impacted by this move, losing out on $400 million. Puerto Rico sustained a devastating Category 5 hurricane in September, 2017. The territory is still rebuilding. According to CNN politics, 127 projects will be stalled in order to fund the new additions to the wall. This decision has received severe backlash, specifically from leaders whose states were affected by the decision. US Virginia Senator Mark Warner upbraided the President for seizing funds from his state, “The decision by the President to divert funding meant to support U.S. national security interests so that he can build a border wall only makes us less safe,” said Warner. “Taking money away from our military …

More People Are Leaving New York

More People Are Leaving New York Than Any Other City in America

DW-NEW YORK.With outrageous housing prices, expensive energy bills, and a chaotic atmosphere, more and more people are moving out of New York City. According to 2018 census data, a net of 277 people leave New York every day. That’s 76 more than the city with the second-largest migrant outflow, Los Angeles. Some residents are making it to the suburbs of New York, electing to take multi-hour commutes from houses that cost roughly the same as their small apartments in the city. Some are picking up and moving to different states all together. According to The Hill’s conservative opinion contributor, Kristin Tate, “The cost of living in Manhattan is almost 140 percent higher than the national average, making it the most expensive city in the country. Brooklyn and Manhattan rents have reached record highs, with median rent for a one bedroom apartment at nearly $3,000.” This exodus coincides with an overall trend of flight from historical metropolises such as Chicago and Los Angeles to rising cities with lower costs of living like Phoenix, Atlanta, and Dallas.

Hong Kong extradition law

Hong Kong Government Withdraws Extradition Bill

DW-USA.After months of unrest, the bill that sparked the turbulence in Hong Kong has finally been killed. The law would have allowed the extradition of Hong Kong citizens to China. Following widespread outrage when the bill was first announced in April, Chief Executive Carrie Lam sidelined the legislation but stopped short of withdrawing it all together. This made demonstrators even angrier, leading to the chaos and violence we are seeing in recent weeks. Though some see this as a positive gesture, and it is indeed a big win, for many the protests have become about much more than the bill that started them. After videos and consistent reports of police brutality, Chinese intimidation, and a highlight of Hong Kong’s true lack of sovereignty, it is not likely Lam’s move will stop the wave of discord. Protestors have issued five demands, the first being met when Lam withdrew the bill. The other four, an inquiry into police brutality, a retraction of the protestor’s classification as “rioters”, amnesty for arrested protestors, and universal suffrage, have not yet …
