DW-NAIROBI.Honorable Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi was the second president of Kenya after the death of the first president Jomo Kenyatta. Daniel Moi was the president of Kenya for 25 years since 1979 until 2002 when he retired from politics and left the seat to retired president Mwai Kibaki.
Moi loses his son
April 20th 2019 was the saddest day to Moi’s family when his son Jonathan Moi breathed his last breath in Nakuru Kenya. The late Jonathan was a well celebrated champion of Safari Rally’s whereby he won many medals as the best driver.
“Jonathan will be remembered for his daring exploits in the racing tracks, in muddy and durty tracks during this time of Easter.” said his brother Senator Gideon Moi.
He further eulogised his brother as social, humble and industrious.
Causes of Jonathan’s death were not revealed but some unknown sources revealed that he had been unwell for some time and had been diagnosed with cancer.
Retired president Daniel Moi thanked all who expressed their condolences to the family after his death. However, he clearly stated through his secretary Njeru that he would not be able to personally receive the condolences from people.
“We the entire Daniel Moi family has been touched by the overwhelming messages of condolences and expressions of empathy from Kenyans and friends across the world. We thank you all for grieving with us following the passing on of our dear Jonathan.
The family with heavy hearts wishes to inform all our friends that our patriarch Mzee Moi may not be able to personally receive those wishing to offer their condolence. We are distraught as family and we ask for your prayers and seek your understanding and indulgence to allow us mourn privately.
We will continue to inform Kenyans on need basis and further arrangements.” said the family.
Friends and family members gathered at Kabimoi in Baringo county for the final send off of the late Jonathan Moi. President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga did not make it to the funeral because they had gone to China. However, Deputy President William Ruto attended the burial.
Jonathan’s body was transported from lee funeral home in Nairobi to Kabimoi in Eldama Ravine.
Moi gives a moving tribute
The love of a father is unmeasurable, and that is what retired president Moi’s words is revealed as he wrote down his tribute. His son Gideon Moi read it and it was so touching.
“Fathers shouldn’t bury their children. A son should never be buried by his father but Jonathan’s death was God’s will. You are the blood of my blood. Stay well son until we meet again.
“You were not perfect, but you were my son. Blood of my blood,” read Gideon.
