Amazon deforestation linked to cattle and butcher companies

DW(BRAZIL).The deforestation of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest has increased to the highest rate in more than a decade, according to the country’s space agency. New data from INPE, the National Institute for Space Research, shows a significant rise in deforestation over the last year. The rainforest lost 3,769 square miles of its vegetation between August 2018 and July 2019, INPE said — a 30% increase from the year-to-year rate prior and an 11-year high. The President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro commented about the INPE report, calling the institution’s alarm “sensationalist”. Bolsonaro also warned foreign governments not to meddle – facing a lot of criticisms after that. For the First Time in Brazil, Blacks are the Majority in Public Universities

DW-BRAZIL.Blacks majority in public universities in Brazil for the first time. Enrollment of black and brown students at universities and public colleges in Brazil surpassed, for the first time, whites. In 2018, this group started to represent 50.3% of the students of higher education in public schools, according to Social Inequalities by Color or Race in Brazil, published on Wednesday by IBGE. Although today they represent more than half of the students in federal universities, this group still remains underrepresented as it corresponds today to 55.8% of the Brazilian population. The survey also reveals that the black and brown population is improving their educational rates, both access and permanence. Dropout dropped from 30.8% in 2016 to 28.8% in 2018. Brazil’s former president Lula freed

DW-BRAZIL.Brazil’s former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been released from prison, where he stayed for a year and a half, after a supreme court ruling. Lula, who was serving a 12 year corruption and laundering money sentence, was greeted by family, friends and hundreds of supporters wearing red vests emblazoned with his face, waving red flags and “Free Lula” signs outside the jail in the city of Curitiba. Brazil Oil Spill – What do you need to know?

(SAO PAULO BRAZIL).Brazil is having an ongoing oil spill. It is already the worst oil spill in Brazilian history and the largest environmental disaster ever recorded in the Brazilian coast. The first oil spill contact was made on September 2nd and at the moment, the origin of the spill is still unclear.
